The Ursinus College Baseball team returned from Florida this past Sunday in good spirits as they opened their season with 8 wins and only 2 setbacks over their spring break trip.  The success certainly helped to make up for the 15 hour bus ride to Florida.

For Ursinus, 3rd baseman Carter Usowski was phenomenal at the plate all trip.  The sophomore had a batting average of .516 on the trip with 6 runs and 8 RBIs.  “I was really excited to finally get going, after 5 weeks of practice you’re just ready to play against somebody else” added Usowski.

Senior catcher Alex Campbell also had a very productive trip to Florida.  Campbell had a batting average of .357 with 6 RBIs and 2 HRs.  The senior certainly adds a power hitter to the Bears lineup, as well as tremendous defense at his catching position.

On the mound, the Bears look to have found their 2 premier starters in senior Seth Regensburg and junior Pierce Greenleaf.  Both pitchers currently have over 13 innings pitched and ERAs under 2.00.  Both being experienced pitchers definitely helped them on the mound explained Greenleaf.  “Being a junior definitely allowed me to realize that the trip should be more about baseball than the fun, and that’s what helped me focus up this trip.”

However, the Bears know that success is Florida doesn’t always equate to success over the course of the season.  The Bears experienced a similar 8-2 record last year in the Sunshine State and then returned home and finished the season with an 8-19 record in their remaining games.  Senior 2nd baseman CJ Diana said “this team understands that just because we are off to a good start doesn’t mean that we can rest on our laurels, we have to keep improving everyday.”  Hopefully the senior and his teammates are able to be content with their work in Florida but understand there is a lot of work left to do.

Next game for the bears is Thursday the 23rd at TCNJ.
