The Ursinus College Baseball team kicks off the season this Sunday in Florida as they take on Eastern Mennonite in a doubleheader.  The Bears are coming off a disappointing 16-23 season which saw the Bears post a 2-16 record in Centennial Conference play.  However, the Bears have a senior laden group this year that is looking to bounce back and make a run at a Centennial Conference playoff appearance.

The Bears will return to Florida for another Spring Break trip that the team often takes at the beginning of March.  The benefits are clearly the nice weather which allows the Bears to play multiple games in a day during the trip.  While success in Florida is obviously something the team looks to achieve, it is clear that success in Florida doesn’t always equate to success throughout the season.  The team finished their 2016 trip with an 8-2 record yet finished the season on a 8-21 run which saw them struggle mightily in conference play.

On the mound, the Bears will look to senior Seth Regensburg to lead the team throughout the season.  Regensburg posted a 4.14 ERA in 2016 while making 13 starts with 6 starts.  The senior will certainly look to finish off his career on a high note.  Another upperclassmen, junior Pierce Greenleaf will also play a major role on the mound this season.  Greenleaf racked up a 2.97 ERA in 11 appearances last season.  Sophomores David Drea, Mark Leduc and Matt Rapp will all look to increase their roles heading into their second seasons with the Bears.

In the field the Bears could start up to 7 seniors this season.  Experience is truly a major strength of the team this year.  At the plate, senior Jay Farrell found success last season posting a .314 batting average while also having 20 RBIs.  The senior transferred in from Division 1 Wagner College after his freshman campaign and has had a major impact on the program in the following seasons.  Defensively, senior infielder Kieran Geyer leads the way.  The senior’s length allows the second baseman to make almost every play that is asked of him on the diamond.  If Geyer can improve his hitting, he could easily turn into one of the most complete players in the conference.

Overall, this season could really be something special for Ursinus.  With so many seniors it is fair to say that this team might take a major hit in talent for the 2018 season, so success this year is crucial.  It seems like the time for the Bears to make a deep postseason run is this year, we will have to wait to see if they can deliver.
